Homage to the watchmaking heritage
Auguste Agassiz, together with watchmakers Henri Raiguel and Florian Morel, opened a watchmaking business with manufacturing in Saint-Imier in 1832. Agassiz soon introduced the watches "in the style of Saint-Imier", known as particularly durable, throughout Europe. He soon acquired a good reputation and high profile. In 1854, his nephew Ernest Francillon took over the management of the company. In 1866, the latter bought a plot of land outside Saint-Imier called les Longines, French for "the oblong meadows". From 1867, the newly built factory produced pocket watches marked "E. Francillon, Longines, Suisse". On May 27, 1889, the name Longines was registered with the Swiss Federal Office of Intellectual Property. With the registration at the International Intellectual Property Office in March 1893, Longines became the oldest officially registered watch brand in the world.
