Automatic watches

No annoying manual winding via the crown and a much more precise accuracy. For decades, the small technical marvels have accompanied us in the form of automatic movements. They wind themselves via the rotor with every movement of the arm. The rotor is a weight that rotates around an axis and remains in space based on the gravity of its position. A slipping clutch prevents overwinding of the mainspring when the watch is already fully wound.
Early models of automatic wristwatches were partly equipped with a pendulum oscillating weight (colloquially also "hammer automatic") instead of a rotor. As early as 1775, Swiss watchmaker AbrahamLouis Perrelet managed to integrate a self-winding mechanism into his pocket watches. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual of 1931 is considered the first functioning automatic wristwatch with a rotor that can be wound on one side.

The function of an automatic watch relies on the kinetic energy of the wearer. When the wearer moves his wrist with the watch, this energy is converted by a ball-bearing rotor as a flywheel to tension the mainspring. In watches with a visible back, this rotor is clearly visible.
As the spring wants to return to its original, untensioned form, this generates the actual driving force. The mainspring, which consists of a fine wire, is spirally wound and packed in the spring barrel. The force generated by the spring trying to unwind is transmitted to the gear train. The slipping clutch, also called "bridge" prevents the spring from being overwound.

The foundation for the development of the automatic watch dates back to the 18th century. The officially dated and patented inventor of the automatic watch is the Briton John Harwood. He received the patent for it in Switzerland in 1924. The first well-functioning automatic wristwatch was the Rolex Oyster Perpetual in 1931.
